IFJ Calls for Investigation into Killing of Reuters Cameraman in Gaza Strip
The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) today called for an investigation into an explosion in the Gaza Strip that killed a cameraman working for Reuters news agency and two other civilians.
“If the first reports are true that Israeli fire is responsible for this incident we need to know how it happened and why it happened,” said IFJ General Secretary Aidan White.
According to Reuters, local residents said an Israeli air strike killed cameraman Fadel Shana, 23, just as he got out of an un-armoured sport utility vehicle that carried "TV" and "Press" markings. The explosion killed him and two bystanders but soundman Wafa Abu Mizyed, escaped unhurt and was being treated for shock, the agency said.
An Israeli military spokeswoman told Reuters she had no information on an air strike on a vehicle in the area where the incident took place.
Reuters has called for an investigation into the killing.
Palestinian journalists face many threats from various sources. Last year three media workers were killed in clashes between Fatah and Hamas factions in Gaza City.
